Apple TV (2010)

As a media device we loved the Apple TV's simplicity, but we were disappointed by the lack of content available in Australia

Compact size and design, ease of use and setup, excellent interface, good quality, AirPlay feature

No way to rent TV shows, no hard drive, HD content limited to 720p, limited content available compared to US

The Apple TV is competitively priced and boasts an excellent interface, so if you want an easy to use, basic solution to rent movies you'll appreciate its simplicity. Unfortunately, the lack of content – particularly the fact that Australian users...

Has Apple entered a market sector in which its principles fundamentally undermine its chances of success?

and that's it.

Apple TV review: a brilliant streamer, but still missing some key apps

The new 4th generation Apple TV is so Apple. The app-enabled set-top box is tiny and beautiful, fast and slick. It's a big step towards the future but yet is sometimes annoying and occasionally limiting. What else did we expect?

Really slick interface ; Siri can be excellent ; App Store is growing well

but some key apps are missing ; Text entry is really bad ; No 4K

The new Apple TV is a really great, smooth, easy media box – right up until it does something which leaves you scratching your head.

Review: Apple TV

There are two ways to talk about the Apple TV. One is in Apple's language of grand statements like “all the entertainment your TV can handle.” You could discuss what “the future of television” looks like, what role Siri plays in it, and how it all...

Its Netflix loads faster than your Netflix. Even without the TV stuff, there's a great gaming machine inside the Apple TV. The remote is super-versatile. Apps probably are the future of TV

The remote is super-frustrating. Setting everything up will leave you wanting to commit crimes. Siri and the App Store both have some work left to do

That is not this, though. This Apple TV is a PowerPoint presentation, not a finished execution. You can buy it now, but know that you’re doing so in the hope that the App Store quickly gets bigger and better. (And in fairness, Apple’s track record says...

Streaming Star

The 2012 version of Apple TV has the big feature we've all been waiting for: Full 1080p HD output from iTunes and Netflix.

1080p, finally. Purchases from iTunes are stored in iCloud for syncing across devices. If you’re an iTunes Match subscriber, you can stream your tunes and playlists from iCloud. Use AirPlay to stream from any iOS device, or from any iTunes library on...

Similarly-priced boxes (like the Roku 2 XS) offer more streaming services. Can’t remove or rearrange icons in main menu. 8GB storage is for caching only, and you can’t side-load content through the microUSB port. Remote is too simple and too easy to...

Apple TV (fall 2010) review

Editors' note (March 7, 2012): As of March 16, 2012, the 2010 Apple TV reviewed here has been replaced with an updated 2012 model . The new Apple TV adds support for 1080p video, has an updated A5 processor, and sports an updated main interface (which...

The Apple TV lets you stream all of the movies and TV shows available in the iTunes Store to your HDTV on a pay-per-view basis, with purchases stored in the cloud for future on-demand access. It offers Netflix and a handful of other online video,...

The competing Roku 2 offers more streaming services, including Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, and Pandora. The new AirPlay mirroring feature seems cool, but doesn't currently have much practical use. And the upcoming Roku LT will offer much of the...

The Apple TV is an excellent streaming video box, especially for Apple fans who will use AirPlay and the upcoming iTunes Match service, but it's missing a few key apps like Hulu Plus and Pandora.

Apple TV (2010)

Apple finally gets its hobby product right with a fully revamped Apple TV with a smaller footprint, a smaller price, 99-cent TV show rentals, Netflix, and iOS-device streaming.

Compact design. Intuitive user interface. Streams video, music, and photos from your computer, iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. 99-cent TV-show rentals. Streams Netflix Watch Instantly content, YouTube, and content from iOS devices to Apple TV.

No hard drive. Can't purchase content-streaming only. Can't rent a show on Apple TV and watch it on other devices or your computer. Limited rental content available. Connects via HDMI—not compatible with older televisions without purchasing adapter....

Apple TV Review

More appealing than ever, the latest Apple TV is finally the streamer we'd always hoped it could be

Apple TV 2012 – introOver the years, the Apple TV has delighted and frustrated in equal measure. This diminutive media streamer has always been slick to use, its polished interface and simple set-up

Apple TV 2nd Generation review

The new-look AppleTV replaces the original 2007 model. It's smaller than its predecessor, measuring a mere 3.9ins wide and deep, and just 0.9in high. The reduction in size – and price cut from £200 to £100 – was made possible by removing the hard disk....

A breeze to set up and use and features an attractive graphical interface

Limited content available via iTunes in the UK; rentals are comparatively expensive
