Sony RX100 V review

Five stars for the fifth edition of Sony's multitalented compact camera

Versatile ; Viewfinder AND a tilting screen ; Powerful for a compact

Expensive for a compact ; Limited zoom range

A small improvement over the RX100 IV, but Sony’s getting ever closer to the perfect premium point-and-shoot

Sony RX100 V review: Impressive, but resting on its laurels

Sony has completely owned the high-end compact camera market since the launch of the original RX100 back in 2012 . From the third-gen model , it tore up what a palm-sized compact could do by introducing a built-in electronic viewfinder and faster lens....

Great lens and image quality, palm-sized portability, built-in viewfinder, tilt-angle LCD screen, fast burst mode and notable autofocus improvement

Still no touchscreen control, movie button position, autofocus still basic in some modes, no aperture ring, finder assembly per use, huge expense

There's no doubting that the Sony RX100 V is a brilliant compact camera. It's small, it's powerful, its continuous autofocus is notably improved, the images it can enable you to capture are great… but it's not that different to its RX100 IV...

Sony RX100 V review

Compact performance redefined

Built-in EVF ; 24fps burst shooting ; 315-point AF system ; Excellent image quality ; Advanced 4K video

Some handling issues ; No touchscreen ; Pricey compared to rivals

Bristling with high-end features that are matched by impressive performance, the RX100 V is a great premium compact that's only let down by some frustrating handling quirks.

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 V review

If there's ever been a point-and-shoot that deserves a high price tag, it's Sony's RX100 Mark V.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V

Though its price is tough to swallow, the Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V is Sony's most advanced pocket camera yet.

1-inch image sensor. Wide-aperture zoom lens. Strong low-light performance. Quick autofocus. 24fps burst shooting. Raw shooting support. Customizable controls. Tilting LCD. Pop-up OLED EVF. Wi-Fi with NFC. Super slow-motion HD video. 4K recording.

Very expensive. Competing models have longer zoom lenses. Omits hot shoe. Lacks touch screen. Long times to clear buffer and render HFR video.

Sony has pulled no punches in designing the RX100 V. The pocket compact has more tech than you'll find in many SLRs. It can shoot 20MP Raw images at 24fps while keeping moving subjects in focus, rolls both 4K footage and 1080p slow motion, and puts...

Sony RX100 V

Sony has enjoyed huge success with its premium range of RX100-series cameras, breaking the mould for high-end compact cameras when it launched the first version way back in 2012.

Sony RX100 V review: The fastest shooter in the West

A technical triumph, The Sony RX100 V is the ultimate compact camera for those who can afford it.

Outstanding image and video quality ; Genuinely pocket-sized ; Record-breaking performance

Relatively small zoom range ; No touchscreen ; High price

The blistering performance is overkill for most situations but it’s great to have a camera that will always keep up with you. The slow-motion video modes are another highlight, and the extended running time in these modes is welcome. The Sony RX100 IV...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V Review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V is the fifth generation of Sony's popular premium compact camera, introducing a number of improvements that focus on speed. At the heart of the RX100 V is a newly developed 20.1 megapixel 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS...

It might look exactly the same as its 10-month-old predecessor, but the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V is a much faster and more precise camera under the hood. The innovative CMOS sensor with a DRAM chip allows the RX100 V to shoot at speeds...

Sony RX100 V Review

Sony's RX100-series created the large-sensor compact camera category. Now, the Sony RX100 V takes it to the next level with performance that can blow away most interchangeable-lens cameras, yet in a package that can slip almost unnoticed into your...

Pocket-friendly design; Unbelievably fast burst capture; Generous buffer depth, even for raw; Fast and confident autofocus; Very high resolution gives lots of detail in good light; High ISO noise levels much better than most pocket camera rivals;...

Very pricey for a compact camera; Still no touch screen; Slow buffer clearing; JPEGs can look over-processed at higher ISOs; Lens doesn't offer much telephoto reach; Battery life is very modest; 4K movies are limited to five minute clips
